Patients can easily be sorted by their Status so offices can identify patients who need to be contacted, including those who haven't started vision therapy or who have discontinued their vision therapy program.
Most people know that Nu Squared VT EMR helps offices record vision therapy sessions electronically and efficiently create evaluation reports. Nu Squared VT EMR also allows offices to track important patient information that helps improve their practice management. Here are some examples:
· Patient Status: Assign a “Status” for each patient that allows offices to track where patients are at in their vision therapy program. Offices can customize their own “Status” list.
· Referral Network: Track optometrist and non-optometrist patient referrals to your office and use your referral list to send out professional correspondence.
· VT End Date Report: See how many sessions patients have remaining before they are expected to complete their vision therapy program and if a progress evaluation has been scheduled.
· Appointments by Categories: Track the types of appointments over a given time period to see how many new evaluations, new VT starts, and final progress evaluations to manage your patient flow. Offices can customize their own Appointment Categories list.

In our last blog we talked about the “who” and “why” of our Nu Squared team. Now we want to discuss “where” you can find us in 2016. Our Nu Squared team will be attending multiple conferences. Our team includes our optometry partners, Dr. Joe Rouw and Dr. Nadira Shadeed, and our chief technology officer Chris Rouw. Our team enjoys demonstrating the benefits and features of our Nu Squared EMR software, as well as meeting with current and potential clients and getting feedback about how we can make Nu Squared EMR even better.
Here are some of the conferences we will be attending in 2016:

Our next webinar is scheduled for February 17, 2016 at 9pm EST.
For our first Nu Squared blog of 2016, we wanted to share the reason we developed our Nu Squared EMR software. When we (Dr. Joe Rouw and Dr. Nadira Shadeed) opened our vision therapy practice we wanted to use electronic records. There were several EHR/EMR options for primary care optometry practices, but we couldn’t find a software that had the tools we needed for our vision therapy practice. Our checklist for a vision therapy EMR included:
- Mobile/iPad option for flexibility when recording patient performance during in-office VT sessions
- The ability to quickly and easily generate evaluation reports, including referral reports, letters for insurances, professional letters, and thank-you letters
- Patient management tools, including tracking patient status (i.e., current patients, graduates, dropouts); tracking correspondence with other professionals; and tracking VT start and end dates
- Office management tools such as scheduling, billing, office reminders, and organizing our referral network
- Customization so it can match our practice’s needs
When we couldn’t find an EMR software that fit our checklist, we thought other vision therapy practices might be having the same problem. That is when we decided to develop Nu Squared. And as our checklist continues to grow, Nu Squared EMR continues to evolve to match the needs of the Nu Squared users.

As we are preparing to attend this year’s COVD Annual Meeting, which is being held April 14-18 in Las Vegas, I can’t help think about coming back to where it all started for us almost 4 years ago – the 2011 COVD Annual Meeting in Las Vegas. That was the first official introduction of our Nu Squared vision therapy software. At that time we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted Nu Squared to do since we were planning on using Nu Squared in our own office to manage our patient and office needs. What we didn’t know is how much better our software would get with the help of feedback from other optometrists and vision therapists. And we continue to get great feedback from our Nu Squared clients, we continue to improve Nu Squared with even more with future updates.
For the next 5 weeks leading up to the COVD Annual Meeting, we will be using our blog to highlight some of our favorite features and functions of our Nu Squared software. We will begin by featuring our Nu Squared video that will help you get acquainted with what Nu Squared can do for your office.

At Nu Squared we are often asked if our software runs on tablets. Our mobile app works great for performing and recording therapy sessions on tablets, but we did not have a way to run the full software on a tablet…until now. Enter the Windows Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 tablets. These new tablets run Windows 8 (not Windows RT) which supports Nu Vision VT. This is great news for anyone looking to run all features of their Nu Vision VT software on a tablet, including performing evaluations and scheduling appointments.
As we continue to update Nu Vision VT to provide new features to our clients, we also look forward to taking advantage of future technology updates that help our clients be able to fully utilize Nu Vision VT in more ways.
Albert Einstein famously said “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.” As I delve deeper into the world of developmental vision therapy and visual rehabilitation, I find myself thinking this quite frequently. I experienced this feeling most recently after attending the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA) annual meeting last week. NORA is a group focused on advancing the art and science of rehabilitation for the neurologically challenged patient. Neuro-optometric rehabilitation can be challenging, as many of these patients have suffered and are recovering from a brain injury. In the past I have attended NORA meetings as an exhibitor for Nu Squared, but this year I also attended the education courses. The courses were presented by a variety of individuals, including a great presentation by Cavin Balaster, a traumatic brain injury survivor. The courses provided a wealth of information that was both inspiring and motivating.
I was also impressed by the inter-professional collaboration between the attendees, including optometrists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and chiropractors, to name a few. What better way is there to improve a patient’s outcome than for professionals with different areas of expertise to interact and share ideas about each patient’s care?
I am excited to apply what I learned at the conference with our patients. And I’m putting a different spin on Einstein’s quote—the more I realize how much I don’t know, the more I want to learn.
Welcome to the new Nu Squared blog. We’re excited to start this blog as a place where we can share updates to the Nu Squared software, show hidden tips and tricks, and discuss the vision therapy industry as a whole. We developed Nu Squared because we saw (and experienced) a lack of practice management software programs specifically for vision therapy practices. There were plenty of healthcare and optometry software programs, but we couldn’t find any with the tools we needed to help us manage patients’ vision therapy sessions and provide easy reporting. If we couldn’t find the right software option for our office then we thought other vision therapy practices might be having the same problem.
We’ve spent the last few years building and adding features to Nu Squared—and we’re proud that it’s now a fully inclusive practice management application with features like scheduling and billing. Dr. Tasman Continues His 50 In 50 With A Visit To Dr. Nadira Shadeed Dr. Tasman continued his 50 in 50 with a visit to Dr. Nadira Shadeed, OD, FCOVD. Dr. Shadeed graduated from Southern College of Optometry and started the Pediatric Vision Development Center of Gwinnett in 2008. She decided to focus her practice on vision therapy but was not able to find an electronic health records software that met the needs of her vision therapy exclusive practice. That's when Dr. Shadeed and her husband, Joe Rouw, OD, FAAO, decided to make their own. They teamed up with a software development company and created a company called Nu Squared. Nu Squared has now developed their software called Nu Vision VT. www.nusquared.com
Nu Vision VT is designed for offices that perform vision therapy and allows them to perform and record vision therapy sessions and vision therapy testing. They have even developed an iPad app that allows offices to record their results during vision therapy sessions on an iPad. This has allowed Dr. Shadeed to stay mobile during her vision therapy sessions while still going paperless.
Nu Squared debuted their Nu Vision VT software last fall at the COVD meeting with great interest from doctors and therapists and saw an even greater interest at this year's COVD meeting in October.
Nu Squared will offer several opportunities to learn about its Nu Vision VT software at the COVD annual meeting in Fort Worth. In addition to hosting an exhibitor’s booth, Nu Squared will offer a seminar demonstrating Nu Vision VT. The seminar is at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 20. All seminar attendees will be entered in a drawing to win a free iPad. The iPad giveaway is in celebration of Nu Vision VT’s new iPad/tablet app, which was launched this summer. The app is available to all Nu Vision VT subscribers as part of their software package, at no additional cost. In the past year, Nu Squared has also added a Scheduler to the software, as well as the capability to create prescriptions.
Nu Vision VT will be offered at a special price for conference attendees. Anyone signing on as a new customer at the conference will receive $300 off the initial sign-up fee, along with no monthly payments until April, 2013.
